Hacking a Dystopia

I'll add my two cents to what some of the other viewers have already said.

This is an eerily engaging story that will absolutely pull you in if you're the right kind of reader. By that, I mean you need to be able to appreciate a greater insight into the protagonist's special talents than a lot of standard sci-fi fare is willing to provide. The author doesn't deal any more in handwavium than he absolutely has to; much of the story is spent recounting recognizable software development and debugging methodologies to a somewhat gritty degree. If you're into that kind of thing (as I am, as a former programmer), you are really going to like the way some of the plot advancements and complications are handled.

Beyond that one aspect, there's something about this story that just hits the sweet spot. A couple of other reviewers have made reference to early Heinlein. Add a very young hero who has both Tom Swift and John Carter Of Mars somewhere in his family tree, and you're starting to get the idea.

The world-building is simple, believable, and sufficient to the story, as is the author's narrative style. Nothing about the plot is telegraphed or predictable. (Well, a couple of things do happen to the hero that the engaged reader will have suspected were only a matter of time. You'll recognize them when you get to them.)

There are a few minor editing errors sprinkled throughout, but nothing that's going to jolt you out of immersion.

This author is a perfect example of why I'm such a fan of browsing the self-publishers in Amazon's Kindle shop. Yes, it's a bit of a hit-or-miss effort to find the good stuff, but then you happen across a gem like this and you realize the hunt was worthwhile.

This unpretentious, terrific little book is the most enjoyable escapist science fiction I've read in the past couple of years. And yes, I too am now waiting for a sequel. In fact, I'm drumming my fingers.

A New Type of Space Opera

I disagree that this is a kid's book. While it was about a kid being kidnapped by aliens and coming of age first as a slave and then as a leader of the ships crew, I think it could be enjoyed by all, even those of us with more adult tastes. As the author says, he's attempting to write in the vein of Heinlein. To a large degree he succeeds. Certainly no one would accuse Heinlein's works as being for children alone.

I enjoyed this book throughly, even though I was some what at a loss with all of the computer jargon. Don't let that stop you from buying this book, though. If you enjoy a characther driven sci-fi book that is obviously developing towards a great space opera series, then jump right in.

Another sleepless night spent reading

No spoilers! I don't want to say anything more than the Editorial Review (which is really rather telling) but I will say this...I couldn't put it down, I spent all night with my nose pressed up against my kindle yearning for more. James Gillaspy has officailly mastered the art of pulling a reader through the story. I couldn't help myself!! I loved it.

So why have I given it four stars? Because it wasn't quite deserving of full marks... if I had it my way, I would have given it 4.5 stars.

If your knowledge of computers involves a "mouse" that "bytes" a "ram" then keep looking, this isn't for you.

There's a lot of tech talk which at times became a little too detailed, a little above my understanding and yet somehow it didn't detract from the story. If anything, it made (the main character) Tommy even more convincing as a child (or teenage) prodigy.

Some of those early chapters seemed a little slow in places but in hindsight they were character building for both Tommy & the reader. The odd typo or missing word did bring me sharply back to reality on occasion but all is forgiven. The concept & the story itself definitely makes up for any of its faults.

I thoroughly enjoyed the way James Gillaspy brought the other characters to life by including their points of view in the story which he wrote with some amazing self control & skill. He didn't lose control of the story (he didn't get side tracked with sub-plots) or over emphasize those characters roles in Tommy's story. As each significant character is introduced to Tommy, you'll soon after find just a few pages written from that particular characters perspective - giving you just enough insight into their background, their thoughts, their motives & prejudices without jerking you away from the story.

That takes skill, I admire that. And now I'm going to go & find out if this author has written anything else I might like. :)

The Royal Ulster Constabulary has for some time been making enquiries into alleged serious criminal offences, primarily as a result of allegations made in the book "The Nemisis File: the true story of an Execution Squad" which is published by Blake Publishing.

As part of our continuing enquiries, and having regard to the seriousness of the allegations made in the book, the book's author was arrested by RUC officers under the Prevention of Terrorism Act and was interviewed at Castlereagh Police Station, Belfast.

Enquiries into the matter have now been completed and we are satisfied that the allegations contained in the book are not true in fact or substance and this includes an assertion that the author was at some time a member of the Special Air Services Regiment. The RUC is satisfied that the author has not been concerned, either directly or indirectly, in the commission of any serious criminal offence whilst serving in the Province during the period February _ June 1972 when he served as a vehicle mechanic with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. The RUC considers the book "The Nemesis File: the true story of an Execution Squad" as a work of fiction and accordingly the investigation is now closed". UNQUOTE

I can't help noticing that with the exception of 'Paul Bruce's ex-wife, the only reviewers who've given this book a favourable review are Yanks. Sorry guys, but you know less about the history of the conflict in NI than I do about quantum physics. That means you know less than ****-all.

Other reviewers have commented on PB's real career as a REME mechanic, which included a stint fixing Army rovers in NI between February and June 1972. Not a very glamorous job, but honourable, and had he not written this unadulterated **** he'd be worthy of respect. Mrs Bruce (ex) has mentioned his 'SAS friends'. If he has any (which he does not), why have none of them come forward to corroborate his story?

Aside from the fact that Bruce confessed he'd made the whole story up in August 1996, you've also got to bear in mind that Sinn Fein issued a statement describing his tale as 'outlandish'. If you consider the fact that the Irish Republicans have never been shy of seizing on any story which paints the Brits as murdering swine, that should speak volumes about the veracity of this account.

I do not have the space to list every single howler in this so-called 'memoir', but one will suffice. When 'Bruce' gives the six-figure grid references for the supposed burial sites for the Nemesis Squad's victims, he gets them in the wrong order, giving Northings first and Eastings second. This supposedly elite special forces hero has worse map-reading skills than a cub scout.

Do not buy this book, unless you've got money to burn, and you have a sick sense of humour.

This book was the subject of an inquiry by police after it was published.

The author then admitted he made the whole thing up - he was never even in the SAS.

The police confirmed this and described it as a work of fiction and the publisher has apologised.

That's also why there are no names used in the book and the dozens of people supposedly murdered are not named. Not to mention to fact that there are only a handful of people still missing from the conflict, mainly British SAS members and agents like Robert Nairac, killed and buried by the IRA.

Absolute load of crap. Avoid.

This is the second book in this series and deals with Alice/ Belladonna's next adventures at dark alley. The principal feature is the change between the very normal Alice and her new persona when she's at 'dark alley' where she becomes a very different person. nicely written with a few blips , probably due to the authors native upbringing in Germany, but these are easily ignored. If you like some soft BDSM with intriguing sex scenes then this is for you.

In Book 2 Alice returns to The Dark Club as her new persona Belladonna, looking forward to the possibilities that are awaiting her.

On arriving at the front gate Alice finds an invitation awaiting her from The King of Diamonds asking that she join him, with memories of their first encounter coming back to her Alice makes her way into the club to wait for her date for the evening. Having been told that he hasn’t arrived yet Alice is shown to the booth where she is too wait, she orders herself a drink, settles down and takes in her surroundings.

After waiting for what seems like forever, Alice notices a man enter the club. He looks around the room his eyes searching as if looking for someone, when he catches sight of Alice he starts to make he’s way over to her. Alice knows this isn’t the man she is waiting for but beckons him to join her anyway. He looks familiar to her she has a feeling they have meet before, but where? His name, he tells her is Aquarius, Belladonna she replies looking deep into his eyes. Who, she wonders is this mysterious Aquarius?

When the door to the club opens and she sees the man who enters next, there is no mistaking who he is ‘The King of Diamonds’ has arrived. He looks straight at her and he doesn't look happy that she isn't alone, there’s no harm having some company while waiting for him to arrive, is there! He starts walking towards her keeping eye contact all the way across the room. Full of anticipation of what the evening has in store Alice could feel something stirring deep inside, is this man walking towards her really Mr Scotch and just how unhappy is he that she didn't wait alone!
This series clearly just keeps getting better, this trip into The Dark Alley was more adventurous than the last one and I can’t wait to read book 3.

I think Alice has only just begun to discover exactly what Belladonna is ready to explore.
