This latest book by Patrick Reardon is a richly deep and encyclopedic treasure of theological insight and spiritual nourishment. Though writing from the tradition of the Orthodox Church Fr Reardon's knowledge and embrace of the broadest wealth of Christian reflection is evident throughout. I highly commend this book for pastors and thoughtful readers from every Christian community. All will find great treasure for mind and heart.

The Orthodox Concept of the Atonement

I have just read through my kindle version of "Reclaiming the Atonement" wherein Fr. Patrick Henry Reardon has given us a tour de force of interpreting and explaining the Doctrine of the Atonement from an Orthodox Christian point of view. Fr. Reardon starts by first going into the Western concept of the Atonement via Anselm of Canterbury and his "Substitution" Theory of Atonement. This theory basically means that God's son took our Punishment in our place as we were sinners that dishonored God and God's honor needed to be satisfied (i.e. Propitiated) so we could be saved. In other words our debt to God (or Satan?) needed to be paid, so Jesus Christ paid it for us. Fr. Reardon dissects and lays bare this concept of the Atonement, and proceeds to articulate the "Orthodox" concept of the Atonement that is summed up (no pun intended) with St. Irenaeus's Recapitulation concept of the atonement. Basically this (i.e. Orthodox) concept of the Atonement states: Christ is the new Adam, who systematically undoes what Adam did. Thus, where Adam was disobedient concerning God's commandment concerning the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, Christ was obedient even to death on the wood of a tree (i.e. Cross). Thus, in reversing the wrongs done by Adam, Christ is "recapitulating" or "summing up" all of humanity.

Thus for the Orthodox Atonement is connected with the Incarnation and Life of Jesus Christ that brings about and leads to our salvation. How. Well Fr. Reardon does an excellent job in pointing out in clear biblical and patristic exegesis that humanity's salvation is brought about through the Incarnation of God as a man (i.e. Jesus Christ). He characterizes the penalty for sin as death and corruption. God, however, is immortal and incorruptible, and simply by becoming united to human nature in Christ he conveys those qualities to us: they spread, as it were,all over us. Thus salvation occurs through Christ's Incarnation, which bestows incorruptibility on humanity, rather than emphasizing His Redemptive death in the crucifixion, although the latter event is an integral part of the former. Part of the process of recapitulation is for Christ to go through every stage of human life, from infancy to old age, and simply by living it, redeems it with his divinity. Finally, the end game for humanity is to re-connection (i.e. commune) again with God, and to seek that re-connection to the point of deification (i.e. Theosis) which is the ultimate goal and destination of humanity culminating in its salvation. Theosis equals salvation.

Fr. Reardon does not make a case for the Orthodox concept of the Atonement, he simply presents and explains the Orthodox Church's Biblical and Traditional belief that was handed on from Jesus Christ to His Apostles right down to us Orthodox Christians in an unending and unbroken chain of faith and belief. This is the faith of the Orthodox, this is the faith of Christ's Church, and Fr. Reardon's book explains it perfectly. Axios Fr. Reardon! You are a good and faithful servant and have all been blessed by your literary works, but so much more by knowing you and knowing you are a faithful priest in the Orthodox Church. Again, get Fr. Reardon's book on Reclaiming the Atonement. You will love it. Again, Axios!

I am so glad this book is now available. The Orthodox teaching on redemption/atonement has for a long time been eclipsed by Latinizing theories epitomized by Anselm of Canterbury. Fr Patrick Henry Reardon's masterful and articulate work will go a long way to remedying this.

Somonovich's Euclidean Geometry; Disorganized approach that doesn't really improve on Euclid....

Solomonovich attempts to bridge the logical gaps in Euclid through an early introduction of what are called rigid transformations (or isometries) - functions that translate, rotate, and reflect geometric figures in the plane in a way that preserves their size and shape. Whereas rigid transformations are the modern approach to Euclidean geometry, they're usually only introduced after students have been exposed to elementary linear algebra, set theory notation, and a bit of group theory. Solomonovich postulates rigid transformations without setting up any of the algebraic foundations that make them clear and precise. The way he employs them in proofs is really no better than Euclid talking about picking up a triangle and laying it atop another.

As another review noted, there are also major organizational problems with the book. One example: Solomonovich first proves the existence of perpendicular lines using reflection and then, in a later chapter, without referring to the first proof, proceeds to construct a perpendicular line in a way similar to Euclid. Alternate proofs can be interesting, but here Solomonovich treats construction as separate from proof of existence. The first four chapters seem to lack any progress or organizing principles.

I also found that the exercises were exceedingly trivial, although I must admit that I stopped reading the text after the fifth chapter. This might also be nitpicking, but I found the presentation of some exercises rather childish; I know I'm older than the targeted audience, but I doubt many teenagers will take kindly to exercises that ask them to match clown faces.

Finally, some better alternatives: after reading a small library of elementary geometry texts, I've concluded that there's really no substitute for Euclid's Elements as a first course in geometry and mathematical reasoning. There are issues with Euclid's Elements, but solving these issues requires more of an extended preface to the Elements than a revision of the core text . For those who find Euclid's language obscure, or want to learn a bit of classical geometry after Euclid, I recommend Saul Stahl's "Geometry From Euclid To Knots". Stahl follows Euclid while recasting his proofs in modern language and discussing where Euclid strays. Stahl includes answers and hints for most exercises.

For those interested in a more rigorous introduction to geometry, I advise completing a course in linear algebra and abstract algebra and picking up one of the numerous texts that approach geometry from a more "analytic" perspective - Brannan and Esplen's "Geometry", John Roe's "Elementary Geometry", Melvin Hausner's "A Vector Space Approach To Geometry", and John R. Silvester's "Geometry Ancient and Modern" are all excellent books for self-study.

A nice combination of intuition, rigor, and interesting problems. Solomonovich isn't trying to be a 21st century Euclid, and that is a good thing. At the same time, there are solid proofs in the book, but the proofs tend to shed light on the geometry, rather than obscure it. I think this book is particularly appealing for future HS teachers, and the price is right for use as a textbook.

I agree that the rigor is good - will push the envelope for even the brightest high school student. Poorly written text, no index, no summary of topics GREATLY detract from the presentation. Gets an "A" for content, "F" for presentation/format - almost as though the author assumes the reader knows as much about the subject as he does.

Madam Still Talks the Talk

As I have always wondered why the BBC has not produced any of Ms. Stewart's wonderful novels as mini-series for public television, I cannot help but imagine how media rich such a production would be. Case in point, Ms. Stewart's first work of suspense fiction: "Madam Will You Talk?" Her heroine, Charity Shelbourne is instantly likeable--a WW2 war widow who lovingly carries a framed photo of Johnny, her fallen RAF pilot in her suitcase,gladly expends time from her own holiday to entertain a lonely 14-year-old boy and honestly is confident enough about her own looks to admit when another woman is breathtakingly beautiful. True to her name and her noble instincts, Charity plunges unwittingly yet rather intelligently into a post war intrigue involving the estranged boy, his agressively tenacious father and the boy's lovely yet frightened stepmother using all the wit and willpower that made the British so heroically stoic through WW2. The characters play against the lush backdrop of the walled hilltop villages of Avignon and Nimes and eventually the cosmopolitan splendour/squallor of Marseilles which we see, smell and hear from the passenger side of Charity's car in a chase sequence more harrowingly memorable than that in the film "The French Connection". Ms . Stewart delivers not only a nicely summed up tale of greed and murder, but neatly fills Charity's emotional void and our own as she allows Charity to utilize Johnny's devil-may-care driving tips, rebel savvy and masculine assuredness through each twist of the plot on her way to finding her way in the world without him while opening her heart to someone else. She is a woman all women want to be: vulnerable yet indispensible. The essential ingredients are all there for a most wonderful episodic film about a wily 20th century woman--get those cameras rolling! Highly recommended, especially in the unabridged audio format.

a literary romance

I first read Mary Stewart as a teenager with her Merlin series, and it left such an impression on me that when I recently saw at a library book sale that she had other books I immediately picked them all up. Stewart is a master writer (and I didn't know she published in the 50's) who informs you as she writes, with eloquent references to geography, literature, and art. The story is about an attractive heroine who is thrown into close quarters with a man who may or may not be a murderer, who wants her to divulge the location of his young son. Like a play with a cast of characters, she is staying at a hotel that has a variety of people for whom you do not know what their real motives are. If you want a suspenseful romantic novel, you could not do better than Mary Stewart.

The Once and Forever Queen of Romantic Suspense

Nobody does it better. Nobody ever will. Even in this, Stewart's first novel, her prose is so compelling that you overlook some of the new-author awkwardness. Some scenes go on too long, and her fascination with cars/driving/car chases (a staple in each of her books) can get a bit tiresome. But you only notice that on your third or fourth reread. It's a shame that romance novels aren't permitted to be intelligent nowadays; authors are expected to write at a junior-high school comprehension level. No such rules in Stewart's day, and that's why she'll never be bested.
