Shon provides an excellent guide on how to read journal articles. The reading code sheet helps to demystify the role of journal articles as proposals to knowledge and journals as forums for debate. I have used the book over the last five years with my students (many of whom are international and studying in a second language) with great success. The book has helped students to develop their critical thinking, reading and writing skills and when it comes to writing a dissertation they have used the code sheet in their own writing. About the Author

Phillip C. Shon received his M.A. and Ph.D. in criminal justice from the University of Illinois (Chicago); he also holds an M.A. in linguistics and a B.A. in philosophy from Northeastern Illinois University (Chicago). He is currently an associate professor of criminology at University of Ontario Institute of Technology where he teaches courses in homicide, criminological theory, and integrating projects (capstone course). He is the author of Language and Demeanor in Police-Citizen Encounters. Lanham, MD: University Press of America, 2008; Respect, Defense, and Self-Identity: Profiling Parricide in Nineteenth-Century America, 1852-1899. New York: Peter Lang, 2014. He is a co-editor (with Dragan Milovanovic) of Serial Killers: Understanding Lust Murders. (eds). Durham, NC: Carolina Academic Press, 2006. For fun, he lifts weights and watches Asian gangster movies (not at the same time). He still has aspirations of becoming a professional wrestler and a long-haul trucker someday.

Excellent Content - BUT less moving than the 1st Edition.

This is a must have book for any student needing to write social science papers and any instructor who assigns those papers. My only complaint - I prefer the first edition. The important how to content is still in this edition, but I thought it was edited down too much. The first edition (the one with the green cover) has more depth. For example, the first edition has a graphic and moving story about the author working at a gas station as a student and having to clean poo off the bathroom walls. He uses that experience to explain why quality academic writing is important to him. To me, this 2nd edition is a good how to book, while the 1st edition was a how to book that demonstrated the practical intersection of social science and social justice.

Sekhar Bandyopadhyay is a professor and Director at New Zealand India Research Institute. Sekhar Bandyopadhyay has published several books and many articles in his field. Caste, Culture and Hegemony: Social Dominance in Colonial Bengal, Caste, Protest and Identity in Colonial India: The Namasudras of Bengal 1872-1947 and Caste, Politics and The Raj: Bengal 1872-1937 are his other books.

Sekhar Bandyopadhyay has an MA and PhD. He has also received the Marsden grant for his project, Dalits in the History of Partition in Eastern India. His research interests include political and social history of South Asia during colonial rule, identity formation and caste system in India in 19th and 20th century.

The Feynmann Lectures of Engineering Mechanics

On the backcover of Antony Zee's Quantum Field Theory in a Nutshell a reviewer wrote that "Like the famous Feynman Lectures on Physics, this book has the flavor of a good blackboard lecture".

Engineering Mechanics by Hartsuijker and Welleman also has the flavor of a good blackboard lecture. It's really well paced - there's a helpful amount of repetition of important ideas, the examples are integrated into the flow of the text and the exercises present reasonable challenges.

This makes for a much more interesting read than the standard US texts such as Meriam and Kraige's Engineering Mechanics: Statics, Hibbeler's Engineering Mechanics: Statics (12th Edition) and a dozen or so more very similar texts. These consecrated texts seem to have been refined so much, though many editions and many decades, that they now resemble very thick Schaum's Outlines. A typical chapter section contains a very succinct treatment of the theory, two or three (complicated) worked examples in boxes which separates the examples from the flow of the main text and then a list of a hundred or so problems. I know that you learn by doing , but this format is quite depressing.

There is not much on three dimensional problems in Hartsuijker and Welleman which makes it necessary to use one of the US texts for 3D problems. It should also be noted that there are quite a few typos in this book although this doesn't get in the way of understanding the text.

Also there is no dynamics volume by Hartsuijker and Welleman; the book reviewed here is a book about statics.

This book together with Engineering Mechanics: Volume 2: Stresses, Strains, Displacements were saviours for me. I'm a physicist who had never studied Engineering Mechanics or Strength of Materials but was asked to teach them both one semester. I did use the standard US texts as supplements but Hartsuijker and Welleman's texts where the ones I followed and very enjoyably so.

Close to a classic

If you are a Bill Tilghman fan, you will appreciate this book of a true law man. It does not have the Hollyweird splash but does provide a " True Grit" slant to it. I have found little in this type of book, but have enjoyed it and passed it along to another ' BT ' fan.

A few mistakes

Well, since I am reading the book to learn about Bill Tilghman, I am not an expert, but I do know that Ingalls is not in Kansas but in Oklahoma near Stillwater. Update: Since someone misunderstood my first post and assumed that I was making an assumption, I am editing it. The shoot-out with the Doolin gang attributed to Ingalls is described as being in Ingalls, Kansas (pg 119-121). However, it actually occurred in Ingalls, Oklahoma Territory. This book was a good read none-the-less. It is a good starting point if one is doing research on Bill Tilghman or even other aspects of Oklahoma history such as some of the events surrounding Governor J.B.A. Robertson and the KKK. Bill Tilghman's story weaves into both pre-statehood and early statehood history and this book tells his story as an important character in that history.

In the tradition of Woman, Thou Art Loosed! and The Lady, Her Lover, and Her Lord, Bishop Jakes continues to uplift Christian women with this charge for them to step out of the shadows and take their positions onstage as God's leading ladies. The stage metaphor is carried throughout; Jakes encourages women to master the art of improvisation (to put aside pre-arranged scripts... and go with what works in the moment) and to transcend life's outtakes (embarrassing failures). The writing style is vintage Jakes: he poses rhetorical but energetic questions to the reader, shares personal examples from his own life and draws upon the models other women have provided for success. He profiles several biblical women who knew how to step into the limelight: Deborah, Jael, Mary the mother of Jesus, Ruth, Sarah, Tamar and Eve all get juicy roles in Jakes's production. He deals with some sticky biblical passages, arguing, for example, that the let-wives-be-subject-to-their-husbands verse in Ephesians has too often been taken out of context and used to suppress women and rob them of their voices. Jakes also points to modern-day leading ladies, such as radio magnate Cathy Hughes, television icon Oprah Winfrey and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt as role models. Some of his self-help advice is clichEd; readers are asked to decide, for example, whether their trials will make them bitter or better. Overall, however, Jakes offers a fresh and compassionate summons for women to recognize their divine worth.

Hard to get into the act!

This is one of my favorite authors. However, I must say that this book was very difficult to get into. The message was focused around women taking their roles in God's theater. I do not feel that this was one of the best organized books. I consider myself an avid reader and this book was just very difficult to get through. I found myself several times having to put it down becuase my mind would drift. I was dissapointed in this book. I kind of got a sense that maybe Serita wrote most of it. Her Princess Within has the same affect on me.

A Platitude on Every Page

I have loved listening to Bishop Jakes preach since he was still in his little church in West Virginia. I've watched his programs and listened to his tapes. I bought this book on his name alone. What a disappointment. God's Leading Lady is like one continuous pep rally. Rah! Rah! Rah! Sister, you can do it. Go! Go! Go! "Step out of the shadows and into the light". "Don't believe that you are alone no matter how desolate and bare your life's theater feels". "You must move beyond the Potter's shelf into the fire of greatness". "It is time you soar". "All the world is your stage--step up and allow yourself to shine".

I agree wholeheartedly with the message of this book. As women, we do put shackles on ourselves or allow others to do so. I don't think the author did enough to explain how to soar, just to have faith and do it. I couldn't get into the message or the point of the book because I was exhausted from wading through paragraph after paragraph of rhetoric and tedium. The book did get better as it went along, but not enough to warrant the money spent.

Ladies will put this book down and pick up rejuvenation, motivation, inspiration, wisdom, discernment and may even discover a spiritual gift that has laid dormant for years. You owe it to yourself to read this book and then share it with another "Leading Lady".
