In it Smith analyzes the major elements of political economy, from market pricing and the division of labor to monetary, tax, trade, and other government policies that affect economic behavior. Throughout he offers seminal arguments for free trade, free markets, and limited government.

Criticizing mercantilists who sought to use the state to increase their nations' supply of precious metals, Smith points out that a nation's wealth should be measured by the well-being of its people. Prosperity in turn requires voluntary exchange of goods in a peaceful, well-ordered market. How to establish and maintain such markets? For Smith the answer lay in man's social instincts, which government may encourage by upholding social standards of decency, honesty, and virtue, but which government undermines when it unduly interferes with the intrinsically private functions of production and exchange. Social and economic order arise from the natural desires to better one's (and one's family's) lot and to gain the praise and avoid the censure of one's neighbors and business associates. Individuals behave decently and honestly because it gives them a clear conscience as well as the good reputation necessary for public approbation and sustained, profitable business relations.

Classic book and made to read efficiently

Classic political economy book. You don't have to read the book to understand his main points, but if you want to understand how he reaches his conclusions it's very interesting. You can skip over most of the chapters and read selectively.

The condition of the book was okay. There are cool side columns that summarize each paragraph if you want to skim through some parts or find a particular section.

Great intro to economics from the guy who founded it

Great intro to economics from the guy who founded it. Provides a very intuitive foundation for all the economics that emerges from 1776 to now. Only problem is all the examples are from a bygone economy and not readily familiar to contemporary readers. Also, I could do without 70 pages chronicling the price of silver from 1400 until 1770. Maybe the abridged version would do.

Great book, but Modern Library's Kindle edition is poorly formatted

After some 6 months of buying Kindle books, I've found that the better-known publishers as often as not DON'T do a better job of formatting their titles for Kindle. The Modern Library's Kindle version of "The Wealth of Nations" is a case in point. The footnotes, which appear at the end of each chapter, are all run together in one big paragraph, without any numbers to show where each footnote begins. Moreover, while the footnote references in the text are linked, the links take you only to the start of the footnotes for that chapter, rather than to the pertinent footnote itself. A lesser problem is that the paragraphs in the text do not begin with indents; thus, the only way to tell when a new paragraph starts is if you come to a line that extends only halfway across the screen.

On the plus side, this edition does include the explanatory call-outs of the original (in italics at the end of each section they pertain to) and the lengthy 1906 explanatory introduction by Edwin Cannan (though for some reason not the introduction by Robert Rubin to the recent Modern Library paperback).

But it's a shame that Modern Library didn't do a better job with the formatting, especially since other Kindle publishers have made TWON available at a fraction of what Modern Library charges.

My Favorite Book on the Finite Element Method

This book remains a great intellectual achievement, right up there with the works of Timoshenko. I've been able to write several quite useful programs using various element stiffness matrices spelled-out explicitly in this volume.

Other books that I've read on F.E.M. seem to banter around the subject in obtuse mathematical terms. Przemieniecki derives ever step - and most importantly - he gives complete element stiffness matrices! I have copied very large 12 x 12 element stiffness matrices from this book into space frame and plate analysis programs that I've written with excellent results.

The book derives stiffness and dynamic matrices properties, essentially using the principle of minimization of potential energy. The book does not go into other types of problems such as heat-flow, torsion or fluid flow. But for structural engineers, like myself, I think that it's best to learn first the solution of stiffness problems to get a grasp of what F.E.M. is about.

The best $10.95 I've spent on a book (when it was easily available in bookstores). If you are into writing F.E.M. programs and if you can find this book, get it!

Best book on Matrix Method

This is my favorite matrix structural analysis book. It contains the basics anyone needs to understand the matrix displacement method and FEM. I have used this book many times in conjunction with the "Handbook of Structural and Mechanical Matrices" by Tuma to develop custom structural analysis programs. No, this book does have the latest development but it provides a firm foundation in the understanding of the math, assumptions and techniques required.

Weyl is a giant mathematician. This is a Mathematics book. If you want to know more about these surfaces because you want to go deeper in Relativity, this is not a book for you. It is hard Mathematics.

As in all things considered tools, and a book is a tool, this may or may not be specific to your needs. If you have some mathematical knowledge to draw on and enjoy learning more this tool would help you. If you are taking a coarse and looking for an inexpensive resource this tool will help you. If you are trying to fix the manifold on your car this will not help you. I started with Rudin and Munkres so this was not so difficult but it was an enjoyable read.

About the Author
Margaret H. DeFleur, Associate Professor in the College of Communication at Boston University, teaches courses in quantitative research methods and mass communication theory. She also taught at Syracuse University. She held the position of Visiting Scholar at Harvard University's School of Public Health, and has served on scientific review committees for the National Cancer Institute/National Institutes of Health. Currently, she is the Director of Boston University's graduate degree program in Health Communication. Her research interests include the analysis of government data for use in computer-assisted reporting, and the recall and comprehension of news information by various audiences. She is the author of a number of articles and three books. She received a BS degree and an MBA from the University of Miami. Her PhD is from Syracuse University.

Patricia Kearney (Ed.D. West Virginia University) is Professor of Communication Studies and recipient of the Distinguished Scholar Award at California State University, Long Beach. She regularly teaches communication theory and social science research methods. Her research, both theoretical and applied, focuses on communication in the instructional process. A current member of seven journal editorial boards, Pat has written four books and published more than 70 research articles, chapters, and commissioned research reports.

Melvin L. DeFleur is currently Professor of Mass Communication in the College of Communication at Boston University, where in 1994, he assumed the duties of Director of the School of Mass Communication and Public Relations, a post he occupied for three years. Previously, he held the John Ben Snow Endowed Chair in mass communication at Syracuse University. He has served on the faculties of six universities, three times a departmental chairman and once as a graduate dean for research. Twice, he was a Fulbright Professor to Argentina. He has been responsible for the development and administration of several Ph.D. programs. His scholarly interests focus on human communication. His research interests and publications include theories of the fundamental nature and consequences of mass communication in contemporary society. He has received grants from the National Science Foundation and other federal and private agencies, plus numerous honors and awards. His publications include a long list of articles and more than a dozen books, a number of which have been translated into various languages. He has received numerous awards and recognition for his scholarly work. He holds a BA from St. Louis University, plus an MS and PhD from the University of Washington.

Timothy G. Plax ( Ph.D., University of Southern California) is Professor of Communication Studies at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB). He has been on the faculty at the University of New Mexico and West Virginia University and spent several years as a member of the Executive Staff at the Satellite and Space Divisions of the Rockwell International Corporation. His programs of research focus on social influence and communication in instruction and training. He has received a variety of awards for his writing, research, teaching and consulting activities. A member of several editorial boards, he has written three introductory textbooks and more than 100 research articles, chapters, and commissioned research reports. He is a recipient of the 1998-99 CSULB Distinguished Faculty Research and Creative Activity Award, the 1997-98 CSULB Associated Students Presidential Award, and both the "Triad of Excellence" Engineering Award and the Distinguished Research Award from the Space Division of the Rockwell International Corporation.

One of the worst textbooks I have ever encountered

This book just drags on without really getting to any particular point. One of the worst textbooks I have ever encountered. There would be a paragraph or two about a certain topic only to then be informed that one would cover that topic in a latter chapter. For me, that was confusing and wasteful of my time.

An easily overlooked GEM!

In researching material for a book project that pertains to the ancient antediluvian world, it was inevitable that the "Atlantean" mythos would find its way onto my reading list. I had recently finished reading "Gateway to Atlantis" by Andrew Collins (published in 2000) and found that one his references was "The Shadow of Atlantis" by Alexander Braghine; for whatever reason I was intrigued enough to order the book.
I was not sure what to expect from a book that was originally published in 1940 (this edition published 1997) and expected its content to be somewhat dated. I was pleasantly surprised by the wealth of information and insight to this lost chapter of our past. The etymology alone of particular words & names is priceless, as well as the depth of research and the "pre-PC" forthrightness which is somewhat refreshing. The lost continent of Atlantis and Atlantean theories in general was not on my radar, although the concept is intriguing and one should keep an open mind. I'm quickly becoming a convert and am finding that there is so much more to mankinds past than we've been led to believe by mainstream historians and academics. If you are a student of Atlantean theory then you will appreciate this book, one that otherwise might be overlooked for much more recent fare. For holding up and being relevant for over 70 years, I'm compelled to give this book 5 stars.

A down-to-earth pladoyer for the myth of Atlantis

This book was a fun to read, though I am quite suspicious towards people who seemingly try to convince the reader of the very existence of Atlantis. And here is the thing: the author does not. Instead I was surprised how calm the authors is in trying to prove the case for the sunken continent thereby astonishingly using facts, that were reestablished only after the radio-carbon dating method was invented after the war. (don`t forget this book was written in the 30s). Though no piece of evidence has ever been found, no dagger, no tablet, no piece of paper..., but the author does a terrific job for his time to dwell on old legends of this planet`s people who tell of visitors from other continents, from islands vanished and so on, thereby accidently proving something that has long been thought impossible: the very crossing of the Atlantic ocean by Europeans as well as Africans. In summery the authors leaves the existence of Atlantis to the imagination of the reader, but instead does a terrific job at pointing at the paths, that lead to the myth.
