I am new to Linux so, I need guidelines to learn the command line of the Linux. This book is great to learn about Linux in general and to get started with scripting. There is a lot of information about other shells such as csh, zsh, korn and bash. You can read the chapter on bash scripting only and not the other if you would like. The book has a great flow and it is easy to follow along.

Gives good examples of real world applications

I have been using this book to teach an introductory university-level mechanical engineering class that emphasizes computer programming. This book adequately covers all important topics in Fortran and contains many real-world engineering applications (such as solving for roots).

The examples are well commented, which is great for students who are beginning to learn how to program.

I feel that this book is designed for someone who has very little experience in computer programming and I would not recommend this book to someone who is already well-versed in other computer languages. A much smaller book, such as "Schaum's Outline of Programming With Fortran 77 (Schaum's Outlines)," would be better for advanced programmers who want to learn Fortran.

Unacceptable printing.

I am returning this item because the printing is unacceptably poor. The book is softbound and yet the pages appear to be photocopies, and not good ones. The syntax definitions (the most important part, for me), are in gray-on-gray box text that, in this printing, is almost unreadable.

Bare Hands & Cold Steel!

This book was originally published by the United States Marine Corps magazine "Leatherneck". This treatment is one of the only "classic" works on unarmed hand-to-hand and close combatives. The book is divided into three major areas of military combatives; bayonet fighting, knife fighting/defense, and unarmed combat. Also there is a small subsection on stick fighting that is very good (better then some full titles on the subject), one of the books highlights among many other nuggets of information.

The knife fighting/defense methods that Styers advocates in this book is based on the techniques taught by Anthony Biddle (author of "Do or Die) in World War II. The section on unarmed hand-to-hand combat in its day was one of the best treaties to be published, and a lot of the techniques hold true today. This section is brief but simple and direct and immediately applicable for the untrained fighter.

Styer advocates three rudimentary attack methods. All the attacks utilize an immediate devastating follow-up. When applied with surprise, speed and aggression these techniques are almost foolproof. On defensive techniques no time is wasted on the fancy or complicated methods that could possibly get the defender killed, instead Styer focuses on time tested techniques used in combat in two major conflicts.

Overall this is an incredible historical text that should be looked at by the professional combatant.

Classic For a Reason -or- What To Do When Your Gun Jams

This is a complete fighting book, in that it REALLY tells you everything you NEED to know about fighting for keeps. What I like best about it (besides that fact that the techniques work, are easy to learn, the book is inexpensive, etc) is that the stance and many of the movements he teaches are the same for knife, stick, and unarmed combat. Most people who buy these books think that by merely owning them and flipping through them from time to time they automatically become qualified to judge the material. Hence some of the negative reviews. Amazingly enough, you actually have to read, study, and then practice. One review questioned the knife fighting techniques on the basis that they were developed from fencing- as if that is somehow an invalid form of short blade combat. Seemed to work fine for Jim Bowie and his ilk back before the revolver became affordable and reliable. I guess all of the people who died in knife duels using these techniques can get back up now. Another complained that you had to be quick to utilize them. Well, duh. If you actually read the instructions and THEN look at the pictures you will see why these techniques were effective against the Asian martial arts trained Kommies in Korea. Simple, brutal, and devastating. See also "Bowies, Big Knives, and The Best of Battle Blades" and "Everybody's Knife Bible". Combined with "Cold Steel", these three books will teach you everything you need to know about knives and their proper uses. One caveat- don't throw your knife in combat!!! Don't throw any knife unless it is designed for throwing!!! The knife throwing section of this book is novelty fluff, for people with too much time on their hands. Also, his knife grip on page 43 is obviously a misprint, so disregard it. Also also, don't lean your rifle against a tree where you can't get to it,like in the scenario he describes on page 37. If nothing else, your rifle will fall over and you will damage the finish.

Hated it!

I hate dthis book. The story was silly. The hero and heroine were immature people who couldn't admit their attraction for one another, so the hero deceptively convinces the heroine to have sex with him. The sex is so bland and one-sided. I had no respect for the heroine. The continue to have sex, and then, it magically spirals into a relationship. Stupid story, stupid waste of money!

Trying to give up smoking, this rocker uses his assitant for sex as an alternative to smoking. But, he secretly loves her and is going to use sex to convince his voluptous assistant that he really loves her. Reading this book was an hour of my life that I can't get back. Yikes!

No different from 7th edition

This book is no different than the cheaper, 7th edition. I hate when publishers release new editions when the only objective is to make profit at the expense of broke college students! The 7th edition is from 2009, and this 8th edition is from 2012. I had both copies and just for curiosity, browsed them both, compared the questions, compared many sections. Guess what? They are practically identical. When I thought I saw a difference, it was merely with the phrasing of a question, just a noun/verb switch. Seriously? The text itself presents information that is easy to grasp, so it is a great resource. Just wanted to shed light on the insignificant difference of the two most recent editions.

My professor wanted us to have the 9th edition of this book, but okayed that I rent this out since it is only the previous edition. Found that it is almost all the same material, just rearranged. And the 2 chapters that werent the same, I was able to get from friends in the class. Also, only rent if you dont have an interest in pursuing research.

Excellent

I have two standard textbooks on antennas, namely, Antenna Theory by Balanis and Antennas by Kraus (both third edition). Both are good books. But if I could keep only one book, I would definitely choose Balanis because, in my non-expert opinion, it is more coherent, more systematic, and has a stronger emphasis on principles. Balanis also comes with a helpful CD containing Powerpoint slides (tons of them), Matlab files, and a few other items. The paper quality is superb but the paper thickness makes for a tome that feels like a heavy college dictionary. The mathematics is not as scary as I originally thought, and should be okay for final year EE undergraduates. I recommend this book highly and unreservedly.

Average textbook, better reference

If you are an upper-level/graduate student who doesn't like derivations (you know who you are), this book is not the greatest choice for you. The way the book is written is very dry and not conducive to staying awake. Reading this (and taking notes) at my own pace, I took three months to wade through Chapter 2! I had to mark several pages with sticky notes to remember to re-read things I didn't understand.
On the other hand, this book has some nice reference information if you are doing computer simulations of antennas, and would like to double-check the results of your models. The graphs and figures were extra helpful. The index generally supports the use of this book as a reference text, although it has failed to identify some very helpful graphs.
Overall, it is a decent book, and I'm glad to have a copy. I've just started reading another antennas book, Antennas For All Applications, 3rd. ed., by John Kraus and Ronald Marhefka, and I find it much easier to read. In one sentence, that book explained radiation resistance in a way that made more sense to me than all the definitions and equations in an entire section of the Balanis text. The layout on each page of the Kraus book was easy on the eyes, with the text in the standard Times New Roman and the Figure captions in an Arial type of font, which made it easier to read.
If you are a student who usually ends up wasting time or dozing off when you try to read your textbook, you'll do the same with this one. If you just need to read a section or two as a reliable reference, this book is fine.

An excellent text on antennas

Any one who have had an introductory course on electromagnetics may use this book either as a reference for an antenna design or as a perfect learning material. Balanis' clear, informative language, enhanced with many illustrations help the student to understand the subject easily. Due to its wide range of topics, the book is of invaluable help for an antenna designer. The diskette provided with the book includes FORTRAN codes for many practical design problems and frees the reader from complicated formulas. A must have for any enginneer involved in the subject!
