Ryan Kurczak completed training with The American Institute of Vedic Studies and the European Institute of Vedic Studies in the subjects of Yoga, Ayurveda and Jyotish. He has studied astrology intensively under Richard Fish and Ernst Wilhelm. Ryan was initiated into Kriya Yoga by a direct disciple of Paramahansa Yogananda. He teaches group meditation, Kriya Yoga prac-tices, and the Yoga Sutras at various Yoga and New Thought Centers, and works with sincere students individually. Finally! Clarity in the fog

Ryan Kurczak demonstrates his rare gift for getting straight to the point in “A Course in Tranquility”. He delivers the practical and the profound with clarity, offering the reader insight, tools and guidance…without fluff. He has managed to distill esoteric mysteries into simple and accessible reading. With a library full of books about spirituality and various forms of practice, I wish I’d found his book 40 years ago!

Game changer

This book has been a game-changer for me. There is nothing new in this book information-wise. The solutions offered to certain issues are quite common sense and simple. Yet the way in which the author presents the problems and delivers the tactics to overcome the struggles is the best I've seen yet. I felt as if the book was speaking directly to me. Straight, to-the-point, and no-nonsense. Reading this book gave the experience of having a conversation with the author himself rather than reading edited words on a page. That makes the advice given a million times more effective and that is why I have been able to put the advice into action and carve a path to a more content life.

Entertaining Treatise on Positional Chess

I like the book, but it's advanced. It's a nice collection of (2450-rated, 14-year-old) Naroditsky's notebook entries about positional chess. The chapter headings include Prophylaxis, Defense in Worse Positions, Building and Breaking Fortresses, Positional Sacrifice, Paralysis in the Middlegame, and Maneuvering. Each chapter includes complete games and game fragments. The editing is okay, and the writing is decent, even by adult standards. The instruction is about half prose and half analysis. Naroditsky looks at positional chess from an original angle, and he provides fresh perspective into even the most time-worn examples. He is wary of computer analysis. There could have been more explanation of basic concepts for the novice, but if you're a novice you probably shouldn't be expecting to get much from this book anyway. There are little boxed-in concept summaries, which are a nice touch and I think the editors probably asked Naroditsky to add them. Based on the Intro, the book was pretty much written before it was sent to NIC. Overall, not a bad effort for a 14-year-old! In an interview with Jen Shahade, at the USCF Web site, Naroditsky says that he's at work on a follow-up book about the endgame. If that book proves as entertaining as this one, then bring it on!

Great Chess Tutorial

I have been a professional chess coach for more than 25 years. I am very impressed with the book "Mastering Positional Chess" by chess prodigy Daniel Noroditsky. I've read many great, good and "OK" chess books. I also have been fortunate to meeting many great chess players.

When I opened the book the expectation was to find some curious commentary by a bright young individual. After I went through first 100 or so pages, I realized that I was actually studying the games together with Daniel. I also imagined that the author was actually barely over 10-11 years old when he started to compile the games. Obviously one can discover the influence of Nimtzowisch, Bronstein, Botvinnik, Petrosian and other great positional chess players on the writing style and commentaries: more prose, less variations.

I called the book a great tutorial, because it is not a textbook quite yet. The readers will need to spend some time to comprehend Daniel's recommendations. But when they do, the book will bring the wonderful discoveries of the delicate beauty in the positional play. I am sure Naroditsky will gain more teaching experience to expand the level of the grateful audience in his following books.

Great themes and explanations

Mastering Positional Chess covers several important themes that I have found not to be covered a lot elsewhere including fortresses, positional sacrifice, and prophylaxis. I liked the detailed verbal explanations of the games presented. The explanations clarified the thinking of the player and why one would sacrifice a pawn for position or be able to create a good fortress when down a lot of material. There are also interesting exercises to do at the end of each chapter. Having these problems to do makes the book feel like a mini-course, which is great for learning.
I highly recommend this book.

Don't judge a book by its title.

Rich Froning: CrossFit Champion
A biography

I enjoyed reading about Rich Froning but only for a little while. It was interesting reading about his family and background and how he grew up and the book is at its best when Mr. Froning takes you through the games and competitions themselves.

It was not what I was expecting. There is nothing in this book about learning to be come a better athlete (mentally or physically) or a better CrossFit(er). In short, this is a very short biography with a lot of Born Again Christian themes.

Froning is a two time CrossFit Games Champion. He has beaten a lot of other people in some tough events. There is nothing detailed in the book about how he trains or what he eats. Just general stuff like:
"I work out five times a day...based on how I feel...I eat what a feel like..."
"I follow the Forrest Gump diet plan: when I'm hungry, I eat; when I'm thirsty, I drink."
"To get better at CrossFit do more CrossFit".

Yes, you have to push yourself beyond your mental barriers but how does Rich Froning do that? What does It Take for Rich Froning to do that over the last 2-4 years? That's what I was expecting based on the title and the reason I bought the book in the first place.

Enjoyable, fun read

If you have any inclination towards CrossFit, you'll enjoy this book. Rich chronicles his rapid rise to success in the CrossFit world, sharing his story from life on the farm to back-to-back "World's Fittest Man" titles. Reading this book is like sitting down with Rich over a cup of coffee. Or, more likely, over a protein shake after a WOD. (workout-of-the-day)

Every time I read a portion of the book, I wanted to throw it down and start working harder. Rich's work ethic and passion are infectious.

Equally infectious is Rich's faith.** It's genuine, and you see it laid bare in this book as he does battle against his own pride. I found his faith refreshing, bold, and courageous.

The big question Rich wrestles with throughout the book is, "What legacy am I going to leave when I die?"

Hopefully you're asking something similar.

For Rich, faith and fitness go hand-in-hand. I've found the same to be true, which is why the book resonated so well with me. When I'm disciplined with my body, I find myself more disciplined spiritually.

This is a great summer read. And a great read just in time for this year's CrossFit Games, as Rich looks to become the three-time champion for this sport.

Keep yout expectations low - writing is dull and just 'plain vanilla'

I admire the man and his story is very interesting... but his writing is not very interesting or captivating. It is rather shallow and does not make me feel like I know more about him - I do know his story but not HIM.

And that is okay - I wish him best of luck and he is an inspiration to many, and I hope he continues to change lives.... But this book left me feeling unfulfilled. Rich isn't a good story teller or a writer, so keep your expectations low.

The man might be 5 stars, but the book is 2-3 star territory. If he put as much effort into writing a compelling and colorful story as he does into multiple daily workouts, it would likely come out with a higher rating.

Wonderful book but not for beginner.

This book goes into wonderful details about DNA and coupling to that are experiments to talk about how those discoveries were made. There are a lot of informations to which the reader must memorize to be a dedicated scientist. If the reader does not have a mature and analytical/reasoning skills, then all the informations will be gibberish. The reader also much have a basic understanding of chemistry and biology to understand the informations. If the reader is in high school and is taking Honor/AP biology then the informations will be clear cut. Some abbreviation are used and will not be told to what it stand for. Ex: the book used "bp" (it does not mean blood pressure), this refers to as "Base Pairs". The book did not provide "Base Pairs" so the reader must be able to reason it out base on the context and how bp was used. Over all comment on this book is IT'S AWESOME!!!!

My High School Textbook

This was used for my high school semester course "DNA Sci part 1" textbook used with Watson's Recombinant DNA textbook. DNA Science:A 1st Course, 2nd edi was useful in supplementing the updates in recent genetic advances and some newer, better graphic representations. I found this to be an easy textbook to read, although not intended for those without a biology and chemistry background since the book does not waste much ink on describing what should have already been learned. The other students in my class seemed to find this book to be a clear, understandable textbook as well.

A very good first course textbook that keeps a student (or any person) interested. Nice big, clear print as well. The laboratories were the standard same as in the Recombinant DNA textbook.

In recent years, there has been something of an explosion in the performance of live music to silent films. There is a wide range of films with live and new scores that run from the historically accurate orchestral scores to contemporary sounds by groups such as Pet Shop Boys or by experimental composers and gothic heavy metal bands. It is no exaggeration to claim that music constitutes a bridge between the old silent film and the modern audience; music is also a channel for non-scholarly audiences to gain an appreciation of silent films. Music has become a means both for musicians and audiences to understand this bygone film art anew. This book is the first of its kind in that it aims to bring together writings and interviews to delineate the culture of providing music for silent films. It not only has the character of a scholarly work but is also something of a manual in that it discusses how to make music for silent films.

About the Author
K.J.Donnelly is Reader in Film Studies at the University of Southampton, UK. He is author of Occult Aesthetics: Synchronization in Sound Film (2014), British Film Music and Film Musicals (2007), The Spectre of Sound (2005) and Pop Music in British Cinema (2001), and editor of Film Music: Critical Approaches (2001), co-editor of Music in Video Games: Studying Play (2013) and Music in Science Fiction Television (2012).

Ann-Kristin Wallengren is Professor in Film Studies, Lund University, Sweden. Her research embraces questions about film and national and cultural identity, representation, ideology and transnationality, as well as on different aspects of film music. She has recently published Welcome Home Mr Swanson: Swedish Emigrants and Swedishness in Film and, together with K.J.Donnelly, a special issue of Music and the Moving Image about the psychology of film music.

Great book. Arrived in great condition. Very informative. Especially enjoyed the synopsis of the 1928 film, Beggars of Life, featuring Blue Washington as Mose. A very important role for an African American actor of this era in film. A must read, and a film that is a must see to appreciate.

I’m a very battle -tested and scarred veteran of the fabrication industry. Over the last 7 years, I’ve built well over 200 rear ends and many vehicles (truthfully I have lost count). My rear ends are in everything from Trophy Trucks to daily driven 300K+ Pro-Tour Muscle Cars. My clients have over 100,000 miles on my custom-built rear ends and even more in vehicles I have built in several states and even a few foreign countries.

I am REAL. I have been on the beginner side looking for the answers with not much success and with a dozen know-it-alls saying different things, each claiming that everyone else is an idiot. Funny thing is – they’re right. They’re idiots. I have learned the hard way through blood-stained experience (not ivory tower theory) so that you don’t have to.

I cover the complete chassis build up from start to finish with details on many of the components that I designed / fabricated for this truck. I go into detail with component construction and why I designed everything the way I did. If you have ever wanted to see the "behind the scenes" of how a Trophy Truck is built then this is the book for you! i found this book to be excellent even though i wasnt interested in trophy trucks it was very informative and enjoyable if you like welding and fabrication you will love this book and i also recommend his offroad welding even if you are a seasoned welder or fabricator i just wish it was in paper back thank you ed lerner
