Review From Gypsy Book Reviews
By Ashelynn Hetland
The Shattering was amazing. At first, from the summary, I thought it'd just be a book about murders (which I love, btw!), but it's so much more. I'm awed at the amount of complexity this book packs together--suicide, murder, bullying, being gay, and magic.

Yeah, you heard that: there's magic included in this book. And it's not like waving wands or anything, but more Wicca magic. White magic and black magic and oh my god, so amazing.

What I really loved about The Shattering is it's told in three points of view: Keri, Janna, and Sione. And it's set in New Zealand. Summerton, specifically, and it's CREEPY once you figure the book out.

I don't know what to say without spoiling the book or gushing about it. I don't have to say everything about it (because I LOVE IT SO MUCH) or just gush (again: I LOVE IT SO MUCH) about it either. So let's go with the characters:

Keri. She's smart, knows what to do, but when her brother kills himself, she doesn't have a plan and this throws her life in chaos.

Janna. Janna, Janna. Janna can sometimes be a bitch, but she's also nice at times. And she's in a band called Vikings to the Left (love that name!)

Sione. Oh, my poor Sione. He's the one who's being bullied most of the time and god, every time it happened, I wanted to kick somebody's ass. He doesn't deserve to be treated like they treated him!

Also, since it's told in three points of view, I must say this: they're distinctive. Keri's POV is told in first person while Sione's and Janna's are in third person. And even if they were all told in one narrative, I think you'd still be able to figure it out. Janna's voice is a bit rougher at times, while Keri's is soft--but she also has a rough edge, and Sione. Sione sounded like a wounded puppy or a turtle stuck in its shell. He was just so wounded that I really do want to give him a hug and kiss him.

And all the issues? They were tackled neatly and not like you were being pounded over the head with a message. This is one book I'm definitely going to have to shove in people's hands at bookstores. So much love!

Inborn Knowledge: The Mystery Within (MIT Press), by Colin McGinn

In this book, Colin McGinn presents a concise, clear, and compelling argument that the origins of knowledge are innate -- that nativism, not empiricism, is correct in its theory of how concepts are acquired. McGinn considers the particular case of sensible qualities -- ideas of color, shape, taste, and so on. He argues that these, which he once regarded as the strongest case for the empiricist position, are in fact not well explained by the empiricist account that they derive from interactions with external objects. Rather, he contends, ideas of sensible qualities offer the strongest case for the nativist position -- that a large range of our knowledge is inborn, not acquired through the senses. Yet, McGinn cautions, how this can be is deeply problematic; we have no good theories about how innate knowledge is possible. Innate knowledge is a mystery, though a fact.

McGinn describes the traditional debate between empiricism and nativism; offers an array of arguments against empiricism; constructs an argument in favor of nativism; and considers the philosophical consequences of adopting the nativist position, discussing perception, the mind--body problem, the unconscious, metaphysics, and epistemology.

In depth Nutritional Analysis workbook
By J. Saffell
For myself, I became aware of the NAQ (Nutritional Assessment Questionnaire) a few years ago through my FNP who was also a nutritional therapist. The NAQ assisted her in identifying specific digestive issues that were causing some severe health problems. Quite frankly I think she saved my life through the NAQ. Since the FNP has left our region, Weatherby's book provides me with the working tools to continue connecting the dots between my symptoms, nutritional status and health issues and enables me to ask informed questions of my health care providers.

This is a excellent, in-depth question by question discussion guide to the 'Nutritional Assessment Questionnaire 1.5'. The book has been 'recommended reading' by the Nutritional Therapy Association in their training program. A complete NAQ questionnaire is included. Note: while the book says you can get digital copies of some of the materials, I was not able to acquire a digital questionnaire copy by sending emails as directed by the book. But after doing a thorough search on Google, I was able located PDF copies of the forms matching those in the book. Or you could simply scan in the forms and charts from the book to make working copies.

The book's approach is 'functional medicine' and the intended target audience is health care professionals, dieticians, nutritional counselors, not the nutritional newbie. That being said, I think anyone with a good understanding of nutrition fundamentals and a lively interest in functional medicine could utilize the information in this book. The book, as a teaching text about how to interpret the results of an NAQ, makes specific recommendations for further assessment as well as generic supplemental support. It's a great resource for the pro-active patient.

Since it is an expensive book, I'd encourage people to preview portions of the text through Google Books. That way you'd have some idea if the book will be useful to you. Many of the 'further assessment recommendations' would probably need to be accomplished through a health care provider, but there's certainly enough assessment tips that could be accomplished at home. The nutritional information is very valuable to me because it's symptom specific. The recommendations on supplements is important because it's generic and not tied to a specific brand of products.

I consider this a valuable addition to my family health library and a good investment.

Pick Your Symptom ; Get Remedy's
By Investigative Mom
Easy to read. I wish this book was spiral bound so that I could copy easier the pages I need to review. It does not lay totally flat on the printer therefore some of the type is missing on some pages of this approx 1 1/2" book.

Did you know the symptom "Fingernails chip, peal or break easily" is an Upper Gastrointestinal System disfunction? Or "Dry Flaky Skin" is in the section Essential Fatty Acids. EFA deficiency is often due to hilary dysfunction. Each Symptom has Supplemental Suport to help this disfunction.

"Awaken a few hour after falling asleep, hard to get back to sleep?", this is a Blood Sugar Dys-regulation problem. It is a classis sign of low blood sugar. At night the blood sugar begins to drop, especially around 1 am. Book recommends keeping a diet diary to indicate the kind of meal that you ate. This book says, this is a temporary solution. Other indications are a B vitamin deficiency or serotonin/melatonin imbalance. Nutritional supplementation to support blood sugar handling problems, beet juice, pancreatic tissue (neonatal bovine) is listed.

This book is one that is used by Nutritional Therapists therefore contains functional evaluation points to test clients pain or tenderness rating in the areas of the body. For example, the Nutritional Therapist will check for the tenderness in the Chapman reflex for the liver as indicated in the book for blood sugar Dys-regulation.

This book is used in conjunction with the NAQ used by the NT. (Nutritional Assessment Questionnaire) which includes questions regarding diet, lifestyle and medications, and then the client rates their symptom burdon 321 questions.

This book is a required book for use in the Nutritional Therapy Training and is used very often during the course. The back section of the book has an Appendix: Diet and Lifestyle Handouts: "Foods to Focus On" and "Foods to Avoid," "Dysbiosis Diet-for Control of Candida, Bacteria, Viruses, & Parsites," "Food Sources for Calcium," and "Foods to Avoid on a Gluten-Free Diet." etc.

Interesting story, dull interactions
By Spectre
I really wanted to like this book, especially after spending 14 hours listening to it. It was well narrated, no issues there. The world building was excellent, and it was probably that more than anything else that held my interest. I feel like it has the potential to develop into a really good series. Where it really fell short for me was in the dialog, both internal and external. I felt like it was extremely repetitive and dull. In regards to problems with the guild, relationship issues, etc, I feel like I spent most of the book listening to someone's internal monologue. The problem is they spent most of the time thinking in circles, rehashing the same worn out themes. There were a few times I had to check and make sure I hadn't bumped myself back a few chapters because I was so sure they had just had that conversation or identical internal monologue. In the end I feel like it was a story that tried to be character driven when it should have been world or action driven. I found myself becoming agitated and sometimes pounding the steering wheel or having to take a break in exasperation for the story arc to move forward. This is unusual for me , as I am usually very patient with books, written or audio, and like to zone out to the story. I'm interested enough in the story and the world created to give the next one a chance, but one more like this and I'm out, sorry.

This is a young adult story, nothing wrong with that.
By AudioBook Reviewer
I do not normally listen to fantasy, not because I don’t like it, but because there is simply too much to listen to elsewhere. My main reason for purchasing this was to get in at the beginning of a new series by Jack Campbell. I really enjoyed the Lost Fleet, but I feel like it will take forever for me to catch up.

Campbell has created an interesting world, Dematr. That was settled by humans centuries ago. Now there are the two factions that control most everything. The Mechanics, just like you would think, are the ones in charge of creating, building and maintaining technology. The Mages, while I am unsure of what the control in the society, rule the world of magic and illusion. One thing is for sure Mages and Mechanics do not, under any circumstances, associate with one another in any way.

Think of The Dragons of Dorcastle as an extended revamp of the classic Romeo and Juliet. Here we have a young, youngest ever, male mage who has been given the duty of escorting a caravan, with known cargo, through the wastelands, where bandits run rampant. Of course the caravan is attacked and the secret cargo is revealed to be a young, brilliant, female mechanic. They try to keep from becoming friends, but after the death deifying the experience cannot seem to loose each other.

Quickly they learn that there is more going on they either of them thought and realize, along with there feelings for each other, that they are the keys to fixing what they see wrong in their world.

This is a young adult story, nothing wrong with that. Because of that there is the YA obligatory love story underneath everything. Campbell has created his characters in such a meticulous way, I could not help but develop my own feelings for both of them. I have already gotten the second book and will be listening with anticipation.

Once again Macleod Andrews show his diversification as an audiobook narrator. He his able to go from soft-spoken young adults to creepy overbearing adults with ease. I have been listening to him a lot as of late and do not regret a single moment. He is one to look for if you want to be guaranteed the story is told in one of the best possible ways.

Steampunk & fantasy & young heroes!
By S
Mage Alain is on his first assignment, which is guarding a caravan as it travels through the desert wastes. Alas, desert raiders (Or are they? Pretty heavily armed to be merely bandits.) strike the caravan. Mage Alain does the unthinkable and teams up with Master Mechanic Mari to survive the attack and make it safely to their intended destination. There, Mari heads off to her first Mechanic assignment and Mage Alain must report in to his guild. Further odd occurrences and the blooming friendship between these two continue to pester them both. Their guilds have have nothing but disdain for one another and seniors from each guild worn the two young friends to stay clear of each other.

This was one of my favorite reads of the year, hands down. I am new to Jack Campbell’s work (but I heard him talk at Bubonicon this year, so had to check out this book when the opportunity came my way). The world building was excellent without being tedious. The character development was smooth and complex and deeply fascinating. The plot showed us there are plenty more mysteries to come in this series, and yet, still wrapped up the most immediate mystery and left me feeling satisfied. It was a great listen.

Both Mari (18) and Alain (17) are young for having attained status within their guilds. And their guilds seem to be incapable of letting them forget it. While this can’t be ignored by the plot, I never felt like I was being hit over the head with it. Mari and Alain are young and do make mistakes, but they also approach their work with seriousness and dedication (both of which pay off as it keeps them alive again and again). Both struggle with their pasts, as each was raised within their respective guilds and not by parents. In some ways, Alain’s training was harsher, stripping him of nearly all of his human feelings and therefore, his ability to connect with others. Set next to these two fascinating characters, we have several side characters that I am looking forward to learning more about.

In this world of Dematr, the Mechanics Guild and the Mages Guild have been set against each other for as long as the reader knows. The Mechanics rely on engineering, weights & measures, and logic. The Mages believe the world is but a dream and all but the individual are shadows; nothing is real. This allows them to manipulate the world around them in ways that Mechanics and the Commons (all the rest of us) can scarcely comprehend. The Mechanics and Mages lord it over the Commons and the Commons seem to be tiring of it. There is rumor of revolt building. Questions about guild law and history are frowned upon and rarely answered. It’s a lush world full of secrets and conflict! It was at times heart pounding to listen to Mari and Alain navigate through it.

Without giving much away, the dragons don’t come in to it until very near the end. They are completely worth the wait! some of the most exciting scenes (often coupled with the most humorous scenes due to Alain’s lack of understanding of stressed humans and sarcasm) occurred with the dragons. And let me mention that this book has a bit of a steampunk vibe to it with some of the work the Mechanics do. I am very much looking forward to the next installment in this series.

Narration: MacLeod Andrews did a very good job with this book. I loved his voice for Mari, which was a little throaty for a woman (but, hey, why not?) but also captured her humor perfectly. He also did a fantastic job of pulling off more than one emotionless Mage voice (as required by the Mage culture). As Alain grows and he starts attempting to infuse emotion into his voice, Andrews did a great job of portraying those attempts.

Big Business, Poor Peoples: The Impact of Transnational Corporations on the World's Poor, by John Madeley

Are Transnational Corporations the solution to poverty in the Third World or, alternatively, are they part of the problem? This is John Madeley's central concern in this exploration of a little-investigated aspect of large corporations. TNCs are usually promoted as bringing rapid economic growth, jobs, and development generally. Yet inequality between North and South, and within countries, continues to grow. So what really is happening? The author examines the impact on the poor of TNC activities in the main economic sectors where the invest and sell their products--agriculture, forestry, fisheries, mining, oil extraction, manufacturing and tourism. He charts how natural resources are being ceded to TNCs at the expense of local communities. He shows how weak are the productive links that much TNC activity actually makes with national economies. He documents how the power of governments to control these corporations is declining. Yet the news is not all bad. Producers, consumers, local communities, even shareholders are beginning to demand that large corporations behave in ways where profits are only one of the obligations incumbent upon them.

An indictment of unregulated global business behavior
By Malvin
In "Big Business Poor Peoples", author John Mandeley convincingly documents how many transnational corporations (TNCs) have achieved their success by exploiting indigenous people and resources around the world. The book does much to put an end to the conventional argument that economic growth may be the best strategy to achieve an elevated standard of living among the poor. It also highlights the urgent need to impose tougher regulations on TNC business behavior.
Mandeley argues that the characteristics of TNCs and the global economy that has emerged in the post-World War II era has enabled absentee owners to use enormous sums of finance capital and political power to take control of local resources to an extent never possible before. Because the poor have little voice in structuring or negotiating the deal, concerns for worker's wages, health and safety and care for the local environment usually takes a backseat to generating profits for foreign investors.
Mandeley spends several chapters looking at the agribusiness sector. Agriculture remains the leading source of employment for most of the world's poor, but the book paints a grim picture of what the future may hold. TNCs are busily engaged in numerous activities -- such as purchasing arable land, patenting seeds and chemicals, introducing genetically engineered crops, and of course controlling commodity market prices -- that are making survival increasingly difficult for small farmers. In addition, government-sponsored exports of tobacco products are inculcating a deadly habit among tens of millions in the developing world.
The resource extraction industries of fishing, forestry and mining are examined and shown to be particularly destructive to local communities. While overfishing deprives the poor of an important source of both protein and income, the usually permanent alteration to the landscape caused by unsutainable forestry and mining practices profoundly effects and disrupts local peoples.
Other areas that Mandeley explores include manufacturing, energy, tourism, and health. In each instance, the author probes beyond corporate rhetoric to see what the real effects have been on the lives of the poor. A few examples: wage laborers who are paid little for manufacturing toys and clothing for Northern consumers are quickly discarded when their productivity begins to wane or demands for better wages are voiced; dams built to generate energy often cause extreme hardships by displacing people from their ancestral homes; tourism sometimes siphons water resources from local people to support hotel and restaurant operations; and vitamins and pharmaceuticals taken by uneducated consumers oftent create more health problems than they purport to solve.
The book concludes with evidence of some small successes in controlling the behavior and accountability of TNCs, but Mandeley suggests that third world nations will probably need to demand fundamental changes in how their relationships are structured with TNCs before the poor can expect better.
"Big Business Poor Peoples" is a welcome contribution to the ongoing debate about globalization and its impact on the people of the world. Highly recommended.

a strong critique of globalization
By varmint
Madeley does an excellent job of covering the impact of transnational corporations (TNCs) on the poor of the world, particularly those of the third world. In doing so, he also discusses many of the ways TNCs also harm the environment, since the poor are often immediately dependent on the natural world in a way urbanized Westerners aren't. The picture is not pretty. In their pursuit of maximizing profits, TNCs pretty much consistently screw over the poor, disrupting traditional ways of life of indigenous people, small farmers, and small fisherfolk and making their already hard lives even worse. Even corporate charity is sometimes tainted--Madeley discusses the ways in which pharmaceutical companies, for instance, will give donations to countries of drugs that are nonessential and close to their expiration date--in many cases, they are simply donating extra stock they need to get rid of, not being truly generous (but they can still get a big tax write-off for doing so). Some of the ways in which TNCs harm the poor of the third world that Madeley discusses are well covered by other authors as well--the spread of subcontractors and sweatshop labor, and the destructive impact of agribusiness and genetically engineered seeds on small farmers. He also covers aspects of globalization that aren't so commonly discussed though--his discussion of the impact of tourism was really valuable. The book is not all gloom and doom though--Madeley does discuss successful campaigns to reign in abuses by TNCs. He actually seems fairly optimistic about our ability to address these problems. The principle weakness of the book is that it is mainly a description of the impact of the TNCs--there is not a lot of analysis of the why global capitalism works this way. And Madeley does seem to promise some such analysis in his opening chapter, particularly when he says he used to work for a TNC and so has some sense of how people in them think. You only get this analysis, however, in the last few pages of the book. It would have been stronger if it was presented at the beginning and interwoven with the rest of the book. Nonetheless, this book is invaluable for its documentation of the negative impact of corporate gloablization.

Joy to the World!: Christmas Stories from Around the Globe, by Saviour Pirotta

All over the world, there is a wealth of fascinating traditions and legends surrounding the Christmas story. Here are five festive folk tales, retold by Saviour Pirotta, originating from places as far-flung as Mexico and the Middle East, Northern Europe and North Africa. Sheila Moxley's vivid artwork adds to the seasonal spirit, making this a true celebration of Christmas, throughout the world. Read how the lost little camel's perseverance, resourcefulness and bravery led him back to his mother and baby Jesus' manger; How an old Baker woman's kindness and ingenuity saves the life of Baby Jesus and feeds a starving village; The story of a how a goatherding father and daughter, guided by angels, journey to meet the newborn Saviour and present him with weeds that have been transformed into beautiful red Christmas flowers; How selfless little Kumbi puts the needs of others before her own and is rewarded with a gourd of overflowing water to replenish supplies amid drought in her village; Lastly, a Russian variation of the Father Christmas story, where Babushka delivers presents to children from her bottomless basket of toys.

Amazon.com Review
Do you know how a handful of weeds turned into the Christmas flowers called poinsettias? Or who hid Baby Jesus in a bowl of bread dough? And why a woman named Babushka brings toys to Russian children at Christmastime instead of Santa Claus? This lively collection of traditional Christmas tales from around the world answers these questions with stories from five different cultures. The dialogue-rich, fast-paced folktales are skillfully retold by Saviour Pirotta, a storyteller from Malta who now lives in England. Pirotta's words beg to be read aloud, or even acted out as a play or puppet show. Young readers will revel in "The Brave Little Camel" (Syria), "Baby in the Bread" (Malta), "Flowers for Jesus" (Mexico), "The Gourd of Plenty" (Ghana), and "Babushka" (Russia), all cheerfully illustrated with Sheila Moxley's colorful folk-art-style paintings. Joy to the World is a festive global tour, and a refreshing change of pace from the usual holiday fare. (Ages 4 to 8) --Marcie Bovetz

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-4?Loose retellings of five stories from around the globe. Readers learn why children leave offerings for baby camels in Syria, the reason bread dough rises in Malta, the significance of poinsettias in Mexico, how kindness is repaid in Ghana, and why gifts in Russia are delivered by Babushka. Underscoring each selection is the event of Jesus's birth, the very first Christmas. The handsome, brightly colored folk illustrations help establish the locale for each story, support its succinct text, and provide a strong visual focus. Source notes reveal that the reteller has drawn for the most part upon other contemporary retellings rather than from primary material; these tales are thus only indirectly linked to the cultures represented. Despite that caveat, teachers looking for a multicultural approach to the celebrations and meanings of Christmas may find this useful.?SHP

Adorable book
By A Customer
This is an adorable book of Christmas stories from around the world, five stories in all from diverse cultures. The illustrations are very colorful and primitive in style. I would recommend this book for ages 5-10. I bought it for our Lutheran church library, and am glad I did.

Disappointing book content
By Susi Wolf
The stories are all very Christian-based. I am a professional storyteller and I need stories that appeal to a wider range so I can't really use it. I am going to give it as a Christmas present. I am somewhat disappointed and wished it had been advertised as a Christian book.

An Exciting Read!
By C. Henderson
I read this book not too long after it came out and I found it riveting! It's one of my all time favorite books! Hannah Wade is a beautiful officer's wife who gets captured by the Apaches. Any other gentle-born lady would kill herself rather than live after being violated by an Indian, but Hannah was determined to survive. She learns quickly from the harsh treatment and begins to settle into the Apache life. But always in the back of her mind was the desire to escape. This story goes into graphic detail of her horrible experiences and and the cruel treatment she receives after rescue. Only the love of one man strong enough to respect her strength helps her see a promising future. This book made me laugh and cry. It gave a glimpse into the Apache life and way of thinking as it revealed the pettiness and bigotry against them. There were also other characters that supported this story that made it hard to put the book down. There wasn't graphic sex, but there was adventure and suspense. I'm going to buy it to keep forever!

Love the story, hate the kindle edition
By The Lobster Godess
This is a story I read many years ago in a hard cover edition, and I loved the story. I consider it one of Janet Dailey's best. However, I was extremely disappointed with the Kindle edition, possibly created by Simon and Schuster's Digital Editions. I would have wanted to know, before I purchased the digital edition, that it is so full of errors and typos that in places it is almost impossible to read. Text is completely missing in places as well, with sentences that start and just drop off. Unless I compare it with the original hardcover, I have no idea what I've missed. The chapter at the end, an intro to another story, was so messed up that I stopped bothering trying to read it. For the price charged for this Kindle book, over $16, this was a disgrace and I feel like I have been gypped.

Not much romance
By Misty King
I was dissapointed in this book, since i was expecting to read another great romance novel from Janet Dailey. This novel was entertaining and a good read, however, there was hardly any romance going on between Hannah and Cutter or anyone else for that matter.
