Nearly perfect!

This was an interesting book - in all facets, really - a neat structure, fascinating premise, surprising twists and turns to the plot... the only thing really lacking were the characters. Not anything terribly specific, but... I guess they seemed more like characters from a film than from a book. They were a bit two-dimensional, which is odd considering the book is labeled as "psychological thriller." Some actions were rather unbelievable. I do think it would make a good movie, though - perhaps even better than the book. There was just something film-like about reading the book. Maybe because some actors jumped to mind as being perfect to play parts (e.g., Judi Dench as Vivienne). It was a solid story and quite entertaining and if only the characters had that certain je ne sais quoi, I would have truly loved it.

Disappointing

The ingredients for a good psychological thriller are all there: Alice, the mother who's convinced that her newborn baby daughter Florence has been switched with another baby in her own home of all places. David, her husband, who's convinced his wife has gone mad with post-natal depression and refuses to even acknowledge Alice's doubts. Vivienne, David's mother, perfect organizer of his and Alice's lives, after the tragic murder of David's first wife, Laura, whom he had divorced some time before. Felix, David's and Laura's child, is now living with them all at The Elms, Vivienne's huge and stately home.
The alleged kidnapping/switch takes place at The Elms and the police get involved. This starts off a series of considerations for all involved, including the two police detectives assigned to this peculiar case, Simon and Charlie. Psycological twists & turns ensue, which also lead to the reopening of Laura's murder case, despite the confession of her killer, now serving a sentence. A gripping start.

Why the 2 stars then? I admit I was hooked from the very beginning of this book, which is written in two "voices": Alice's, self-describing her actions and anguish, whereas the rest of the characters and circumstances are reported as seen from the outside.

Up to a certain point, I would have given this book 4 stars. What disappointed me was that, upon approaching the end, I realised that the facts had not been fairly and truthfully presented from the beginning. True, one could still guess and make assumptions -after all, isn't that the... thrill of thrillers?- but in my opinion this book was deceiving for the way it started and ended. I could tell you in more detail what I refer to specifically, but that would give the story away. If you buy it, you'll find out.

Unsatisfying...

Admittedly, I flew through the first part of the book. I couldn't wait to figure out "whodunnit." Combine that with a very slow beginning and I was really anxious to get through the novel. Unfortunately, the ending is highly unsatisfying. SPOILERS I don't necessarily have anything against novels in which the narrator is unreliable. But this one was just too much for me. Completely unsatisfying ending. Someone mentioned that they skipped to the end to find out the "surprise ending" and then read the book through. That would probably be a more entertaining way to read the book, because then you'd more clearly see all the ways the narrator is unreliable and all the things she says that don't make sense if you don't know the ending. That and the so called "relationship" between Simon and Alice was quickly wrapped up in the end in an irksome, rushed, unfulfilling and unrealistic way.

I also don't like the literary device Hannah uses here-- a chapter or so of police procedural, and then a chapter or so of what happened with the victim. The two types of chapters don't start off at the same time period as each other, and then slowly they end up working their way to being on the same day/time. Reading the chapters this way can get confusing and annoying-- you don't even figure out the actual crime until you've read about five chapters in. It's hard to keep track of what happened before what and to remember what happened two chapters before.

And finally, a minor nitpick here-- lines like "Will our friendship be taken further?" (on the last page of the book) drive me crazy-- who talks like that in real life? Especially when Alice and Simon barely had a friendship to begin with?

In summary, while the book certainly makes you anticipate a surprise ending, it doesn't actually deliver, leaving the reader unsatisfied and, honestly, feeling like the time spent reading it could've been better spent. A mystery novel with some aspects of this book (suspense, unreliable storytelling) that's way better, check out The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters. It's a bit more of a "lit" book, but one of my favorites. I will probably read Hannah again, as I've heard good things about some of her other books.

I've owned 501 Spanish Verbs paper edition for years and found it very helpful. When it looked like it was formated for Kindle I bought that one too. It's good but it has some flaws. The complete introductory grammar discussion is easy to read. The "501" verbs are easy to access and easy to read.

But the other two indices have been a problem. In the paper book you can use the English Spanish verb index to look up English verbs, find the equivalent in Spanish and see where the conjugation is. Also you can use the 2,200 verb index to look up Spanish verbs not included in the 501 for a short definition and a similar 501 dictionary entry to help you conjugate it.

In the Kindle edition it's easy to use the Table of Contents to get to the first page of these indices. But to actually use them you would have to page through, page by page, until you found the word you want. There's no way to search for anything except the 501 verbs.

I got around this problem by creating a "Note" at the beginning of each letter in the two indices. When I want to look up an English verb, I "View Notes & Marks" and can page through quickly to the right area.

What the book really needs is two more searchable "dictionaries". I hope that if it's ever developed the upgrade will be available to us, the pioneer users.

Note: I've made my Notes public so you may be able to use them to access these indices with having to enter them yourself.

I am a beginning student of the Spanish Language. This book is vitally important to anyone who is trying to learn spanish. It has not only the verbs, but learning aids all throughout this book. A must for students of Spanish. It comes with two CDs which are also helpful/

I'm just someone trying to learn Spanish prior to heading to South America. My electrician let me borrow his older version of 501 Spanish Verbs and I loved it, so I ordered my own. This version is even better than the previous one because it conservatively uses colored and italicized fonts to pull out important points and oft-used verbs. I carry it around everywhere I go and it is helping a ton! Highly recommended!

What every Bible teacher should read.

This book is based on decades of thorough research in several fields, which lends credibility to the author's insights. Such as astronomy, the ancient Hebrew calendar, the Jewish festivals and the relationship between all three. Old Testament prophesies and the profetic meaning of theJewish festivals, all made sense in a new way. Time and again, while reading, I had moments of "enlightenment", eye-openers, that made me see things in a new lights. Mysteries that I had taken "on faith" though they puzzled me for 40 years, suddenly became clear and made sense against the well-worked out background of research.
Unfortunately, Michael Rood also makes some profound statements that were not explained, and are quite controversial such as stating the exact age of the earth down to a week.
At times I also found the tenure of his comments quite critical.
However, they don't take away from what he does clearly convey, and that is a recording of the life, movements, actions and background of the ministry of Jesus that make you look at what happened so long ago with fresh and deeper understanding. This is because what emerges clearly is that as non-Jewish followers of the Messiah, we tend to overlook the significance of everything that happened in it's profoundly Jewish context -- and what it means for the world-wide Christian churches.
That is why this book still deserves 5 stars. I believe every pastor, priest and anyone teaching from the Bible, should read it.

Very enlightening on the ministry of Jesus

I learned a lot that I did not know about the apostles ... How they followed Jesus when he first called them and then went home and then followed him again. I liked the perspective on turning water into wine and all the other miracles and how it was also done to purposely break the man made laws of the Pharisees and to show that GOD'S law is not to be added to. Also when he first read in the temple and read only two verses instead of the required (by man's added law) three. I thought it was very well documented.

This book is amazing! Worth every penny, and then some!

This book is amazing! When I first heard Michael Rood claim that Jesus' ministry was only 70 weeks (490 days) long instead of 3.5 years long, I didn't believe it. But I checked it out online and found that the 3.5-year ministry idea was based on only two verses, one of which (John 6:5) was not in the earliest copies of the gospel of John, and the other mentions an unnamed feast that the 3.5-year folks say was a Passover, even though it occurred only a few weeks after Passover, so it should be Shavuot (Pentecost). To test further, my daughter and I went through the gospel of John following his many time clues to see if we could calculate the length of Jesus' ministry and we calculated 450 days, so we were short by 40 days. Then my daughter called me to say, "We left out the 40 days in the wilderness!" That brought us up to 490 days exactly. After that, I bought Michael Rood's book. The exact chronology is only the beginning of the amazing insights and information in the Chronological Gospels. So I repeat: This book is amazing!

Introduction

Salsa, the Spanish word for "sauce," can refer to an extremely wide variety of items. Salsas can be fresh (raw) or cooked, thick or thin, chunky or smooth, crunchy, hot spicy, mild, sweet, savory, tart, etc. They can be used as a side dish, sauce, condiment/relish, as an ingredient in other dishes, or even with a dessert. They can be made from vegetables, fruits, or a combination thereof, and are usually served at room temperature, but are sometimes chilled.

Whichever kind you choose, the impact of its flavor depends on the freshness or quality of the ingredients. When good-quality main ingredients such as tomatoes, tomatillos, or mangos are combined with accent ingredients, the result can be a salsa that has the ability to transform the simplest of foods into something fantastic.

Sample recipe:

"Hold onto Your Hat" Habanero Salsa

3 fresh habanero chiles

2 garlic cloves

1/2 medium onion, peeled and cut into half-inch slices

4 ripe plum tomatoes

Juice of 1 small orange

Juice of 1 lime

1 teaspoon dried Mexican oregano

1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro

1 tablespoon olive oil

Coarse salt to taste

1. Roast the chiles, garlic, onion, and tomatoes over a direct flame until charred. Cool.

2. Peel the garlic and tomatoes. Remove stem and seeds and finely chop the chiles.

3. Place all ingredients in the work bowl of a food processor and pulse, adding a few teaspoons of water as needed to yield a nicely spoonable consistency. Serve at room temperature or refrigerate until ready to use.

This is a great book! The book is easy to understand and the food is easy to make. If you have a wedding shower coming up this might make a great addition to their kitchen.
