Review
`English readers are deeply indebted to Mr Bull's skilful translations and Mr Porter deserves credit for his share in the gargantuan task of translating poems that even Wordsworth found "the most difficult to construe".' The Tablet
`The entire book is readably and vividly translated.' The Universe

Meager edition; the poetry is the highlight
By HH
Asconio Condivi wrote the biography portion of this book. Condivi was an Italian painter and writer, and pupil of Michelangelo. Condivi's bio is short, but it does contain some revealing details about M's notable works -- some of which were done in collaboration with other artists -- as well as some of the challenges and technical problems he encountered. Michelangelo's letters are also enlightening, written to notables such as King Francis I of France, Georgio Vasari and Duke Cosimo; they disclose some of M's more practical, everyday concerns -- such as avoiding malicious rumors, and relating to his family, popes, patrons, and supporters. The poems are simply divine! Many of them are clearly inspired by the people that M loved and passionately adored. Frankly, I wish this volume contained more of M's poetry.
This edition inexcusably contains no index. However, the notes, chronology, and bibliography partially make up for it. Michaelangelo's "Life, Letters, and Poetry" is definitely a "read at least one" book for students of, or anyone with an interest in, art and art history!
